Workplace conflict may be inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be destructive. Conflict can be effectively and constructively engaged if the parties to it are conflict competent.
This lunchtime presentation focuses on the learned skills that lead to conflict competency. An encompassing definition of conflict will be offered. Precipitating events and ‘hot buttons’ that trigger conflict will be discussed, and destructive and constructive responses to conflict will be examined. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the dynamics of conflict; developing self-awareness and self-control when engaged in conflict; and, the skills required to foster constructive responses.
The Conflict Dynamics Profile®—an assessment instrument that identifies conflict behaviors (as opposed to conflict styles) in the workplace, as well as ‘hot button’ triggers—will also be discussed.
