April Chapter Meeting: Workplace Violence
Speaker: Brian Simmons

Recently, the news headlines have been flooded with stories of violent acts occurring in the work environment.  It is no longer a matter of “if” another incident will happen.  It’s now a matter of “when” and “where” it will occur.  Over 2 million American workers are exposed to incidents of workplace violence annually.  These violent acts not only affect the direct victims of the attacks but can have a long range impact on your business.  Customers, family members and others associated with the business are affected as well.  Awareness and preparedness are two keys factors that will help to reduce the chances of workplace violence occurring in your workplace.

All employers have a legal obligation to prevent and mitigate the risks of workplace violence.  However, human resources professionals have a significant responsibility in planning for and preventing acts of violence in the workplace.  From the pre-employment screening process through retirement or termination, human resources professionals must lead a culture of employee awareness and safety as it relates to this urgent topic.  During this session, participants will understand the magnitude of workplace violence as a current concern and the potential financial and legal ramifications to any organization.  Actual cases will be discussed and reviewed from the viewpoint of the human resources role.  A list of preventative actions that can be implemented immediately will be presented.  This session will help to alleviate the paranoia surrounding workplace violence and offer current, relevant solutions.
