Diabetes Value Benefit – Reducing Costs and

Increasing Adherence

Diabetes is an issue across Kentucky that continues to grow. However, costs

for members with diabetes on the Kentucky Employees’ Health Plan (KEHP)

are stabilizing with the implementation of several innovative wellness programs,

like the Diabetes Value Benefit (DVB), which allows members with a diabetes diagnosis to receive maintenance prescriptions and supplies free or at a reduced copay or coinsurance, with no deductible. Data indicates that as members began

to manage their diabetes, they were also able to reduce the use of other

medications and avoid costly ER visits and acute hospital admissions. The KEHP covers 6% of the state’s population with more than 260,000 state, school board,

and local government employees, retirees, and their dependents.
